One of the human-environment interaction issues facing Cameroon is the deforestation of their rain forests. One of the biggest reasons Cameroon is losing their rain forests is because over-logging. There are several reasons why there is over-logging of the rainforests. The lack of conservation programs in Cameroon is one reason. A second reason is the lack of effective laws and the enforcement of them. The final reason is that most of the logging companies in Cameroon are foreign owned and don’t care about the environmental impact of over-logging. If Cameroon doesn’t start doing a better job of regulating the logging industry they are going to lose their rain forest.
One reason for the deforestation by over-logging in Cameroon is the lack of conservation programs. In Cameroon there is not a lot of forestry information available to help start programs. Cameroon also does not have a system that enforces the protection of the areas that are designated as protected. “Eight percent of the country is under some form of protection on paper, but enforcement is weak and timber is illegally harvested from reserves and wildlife is poached.” ("Illegal Logging Portal." Cameroon. Web. 4 Oct. 2015.)
The second reason for over-logging is the lack of effective laws and the enforcement of them. In Cameroon there is not an effective system that manages the laws for logging. The laws they do have are unclear and are not relevant to the current logging practices. Another thing is that there are corrupt officials that get paid off to not enforce logging laws. The Cameroon government has shown no interest in making changes to help, which is the result of years of bad governance.
The final reason for over-logging in Cameroon is because of foreign logging companies that don’t care what happens to Cameroon’s rainforests. Foreign countries own a large amount of the logging companies operating in Cameroon. “Foreign loggers have aggressively and unsustainably logged their concessions without much concern over prosecution by corrupt forestry officials.” ("Cameroon: Environmental Profile." Cameroon: Environmental Profile. Web. 4 Oct. 2015.)
This is only one of the human-environment interaction issues in Cameroon, but it is the biggest. The over-logging of the rainforests has become a huge problem. The first reason that this happened is because of the lack of conservation programs. The second reason is because of the lack of effective laws and the enforcement of them. The final reason is because of foreign companies that don’t care what happens to Cameroons forests. “Overall, Cameroon lost 13.4 percent of its forest cover or 3.3 million hectares between 1990 and 2005 and deforestation rates have increased by 10 percent since the close of the 1990s.” ("Cameroon: Environmental Profile." Cameroon: Environmental Profile. Web. 5 Oct. 2015.) Over-logging needs to stop.
